Open Future: Uniserv Software Successfully Ported to Linux for zSeries

Uniserv provides software components for quality assurance of customer and address data in the zSeries environment – Increasing importance of mainframe platforms also taken into account for Linux.

Pforzheim, November 2002.
Uniserv, the leading provider of address data quality solutions located in Pforzheim, has successfully ported its OPENedition (OE) products for IBM to Linux for zSeries. The porting occurred in a 64-bit environment to an IBM zSeries 900. The OE solutions created by Uniserv are software which, using error-tolerant methods, provide optimal data quality in address databases and which supply the basis for the “Single View of the Customer”. As a result of the porting, Uniserv is now in the position to also offer its OE products for UNIX on the Linux for zSeries as a standard solution “out of the box”. Moreover, in the next days Uniserv will install an in-house test system for both the z/OS and for the Linux for zSeries. Thus, sufficient computational capacity also for these two 64-bit operating systems is available on site at Uniserv, providing customers with the best possible support for applications critical to their business, for example in hotline cases.

The reasons for porting the OE solutions to the Linux for zSeries are based on the fact that with the zServers, the classic mainframe operating system z/OS and the UNIX operating system Linux, either with the aid of LPAR or z/VM, can be run simultaneously. This enables each application to run on the best operating system suited to it, but within the same “box”, such as transaction-oriented CICS applications under z/OS and UNIX server services under Linux. Since it is also possible to define several independent, logical servers in the zSystem, this method allows a flexible utilization of the hardware resources while at the same time providing security via the logical systems, which can be operated independently of each other. Due to the technological maturity and excellence of the zSeries, enhanced performance, stability and consolidation effects can be achieved that are not possible on other platforms to this extent and with different operating systems. “We are therefore convinced that the platform zSeries will become increasingly important in the future for a larger portion of our customers,” explains Mr. Peter Wiedemann, Director of Marketing at Uniserv GmbH, commenting on the porting.
