The product line OPENedition contains componentware systems as client/server solution for online and batch applications. It is best suited for use in heterogeneous system environments.

Functions:

The solutions of this product line share the following characteristics:

Utilizable in the client/server environment both online and as batch.
Products, that carry out updates, master two-phase commit. For that reason they can be utilized not only for "simple" but also for distributed transaction processes.
The products are genuine server components which serve several clients, utilizable in a distributed application or as sub-program libraries that are implemented in the same address room as the client. In both cases the API is completely identical.
Within a distributed system the products use the TCP/IP protocol. Thus the OPENedition components are not only able to be used within your LAN, but also for Internet and Intranet applications.
The role that a system platform assumes is not compellingly established, but rather can be assigned according to your requirements. For example, it poses no problem for a MVS host to use the services of an OPENedition PC server as client.
OPENedition products are available for all popular system platforms. Thus planning certainty is given for upsizing, right sizing and downsizing even in a heterogeneous system environment.

Good to know!

The functions of the OPENedition components can be called up by all generally used programming languages. If your development environment is able to integrate C functions (given with practically all system environments), then you can integrate our OPENedition components smoothly. The same is also true for C++, COBOL, Visual Basic, ORACLE Forms, Delphi, Power Builder, Java and many other system environments.

The product line has a unified API interface for all products and across all platforms, so that the function call-up of an OPENedition product is identical, independent of

which platform (client) your application runs on
which platform (server) the particular component runs on
whether the component is firmly linked to the application (important for high performance with mass processing in the batch)
whether the components run on the same computer, but in another address room (typical with the use of transaction monitors)
whether the components run on the same computer, but in another address room (typical with the use of transaction monitors)
