Use Scenarios

For the application of the Uniserv software geocoding there are the following typical use scenarios. They all allow rapid, error-tolerant assignment of geographic information on the basis of address data:

Data Entry

When entering data, irrespective of whether interactively or in batch, new customers/prospects or relocation addresses are assigned to the respective current geographic information automatically in the background. This generally takes place in conjunction with the postal check of the addresses. Since the address geocoding and the postal check rely and build on the same city and street reference files, geocoding takes place "on the fly" with highest precision and up-to-dateness. This ensures that even new addresses in the database always have geocode information and makes possible the personalization of the pages in Internet applications or the dynamic control of the dialogs in call center applications.

Data Cleansing or Special File Analyses

In building up address databases or in transferring data files in data warehouse projects or for special file analyses, it is necessary within many projects to assign the geographic information to the address data prior to actual loading process into the database. Especially for this application purpose in very large data files, Uniserv has developed proprietary solutions either to carry out the assignment of geographic information alone or also together with a postal check and correction.

Periodic Updating of the Address Database

If you value high data quality, you should periodically provide the address database with new geographic information – even when the two use scenarios mentioned above have already taken place. This should be done for two reasons:

  • Even if a customer does not move, the address data changes for a portion of your customers and prospects. Towns are incorporated, streets are renamed or postal codes are changed by the postal organizations!
  • The information changes with regard to individual geographic objects – whether it is a single house, the section of a street, a street, a city district or an entire city. This is because people become older, move to and from places, and, in particular, because milieu aspects change. Furthermore, other characteristics are affected for which changes should periodically be made in the database.

Generally the periodic updating of an address database takes place in the same rhythm for the postal checking and the assigning of geographic information. The reason for this is that address geocoding and postal checking build on the same city and street reference files. You receive the geocoding information supplied by Uniserv together with the current postal data fully integrated and syntonized in itself. This ensures the highest data quality and up-to-dateness of your address database, with a minimum of effort and expense!
