FAQs about Uniserv's Technology

Do UNISERV products need additional connectivity software in client/server operations?

No. All of the required components are contained in the corresponding OPENedition server and the respective Uniserv client kit. Uniserv's client/server technology builds directly on the existing TCP/IP system software in every operating system. You do not have to invest in additional connectivity software.

Do UNISERV products with internal update functionality - example (mailRetrieval) ensure data integrity and transaction security between the application database and the respective data structures of the OE server?

Yes. Here different methods are used depending on the application environment. As general solution in the client/server environment, the servers with update functionality support the two-phase-commit protocol.

Does processing have to be segmented, e.g. according to postal code, for large address databases?

Segmentation is a technique usually used by systems with simple technologies to achieve an acceptable performance even with very large address databases. The disadvantage of segmentation is that there is usually no duplicate recognition between the segments. When comparing addresses, "blind spots" occur in which a considerable number of unrecognized duplicates can remain undetected. For solutions, which in large databases implement an (internal) segmentation even down to the house number level, you have no chance of recognizing the following example case as a potential duplicate:

  • John Franks, 117 Kings Road, LONDON N22 5SN
  • John Franks, 17 Kings Road, LONDON N22 5SN

Do Uniserv products require a special database system in order to use them?

Our solutions operate together with all generally used database systems on the respective system platforms. Our software solutions adjust to your system environment and not the other way around!

Which of the two methods is better suited to error-tolerant search, fuzzy logic or phonetics?

The use of the corresponding methods depends on the kind of transmission and data entry. If optimal quality is in the foreground then it is not a matter of "either or" but rather "both and" and how.

  • The methods summarized under fuzzy logic are good for detecting reading or data entry errors. The methods known as phonetics are good for recognizing transmission errors of acoustically transmitted address. Important with phonetics is the adaptation to the respective language or country.

The two methods should categoricallly be used in combination. Then you have a grip on mistakes, in which for instance a name is misunderstood on the telephone and in addition to that is typed into the database during data entry with a typo.

Do Uniserv maintenance contracts also include the upgrade to a new version of the operating system?

Yes. Within the maintenance contract a newer version of Uniserv products is possible without additional cost because of an upgrade of the operating system. Within the maintenance contract even a change of operating system is possible within the same group. For instance, you can switch from VSE to z/OS or from Linux to HP-UX without any difficulty.

With regard to the wide range of system platforms Uniserv supports for development, testing and support, does Uniserv have all of the operating systems and the hardware required for them available "in-house" at the company location?

Yes. We are of the opinion that the basic platforms offered must be available in-house at Uniserv in order to be able to give fast support. For that reason, all basic platforms that Uniserv provides for its solutions are available for development, testing and support. As testing and development systems, Uniserv currently has 4 mainframes, one iSeries (AS400), 36 UNIX servers and 20 Windows servers.

Are there also 64-bit versions of the OPENedition server and the client interfaces?

Yes, for the UNIX versions AIX, SUN Solaris, HP-UX and DEC, 64-bit versions are available.

Do all Uniserv products always have the same standard and identical functionality in every platform?

Since the Uniserv solutions for the individual platforms have not been developed on the basis of the lowest common denominator, there are inevitably smaller or greater differences depending on the product. In part, these differences in the direct interface to the operating system are technically necessary and intended, so that the product is integrated seamlessly into the IT platform and does not appear as a foreign entity. In part, however, these differences are a consequence of varying release dates or differing requirements in a market segment.
